Preview of the Redesigned 2011 BMW 3 Series

BMW has announced substantial enhancements to the 2011 3 Series Coupe and Convertible, including outstanding style updates for 328i and 335i models and a new engine for 335i models. The 2011 3 Series Coupe and Convertible models will go on sale in Spring 2010. Unchanged are each car's essential attributes of rear-wheel drive (xDrive is available on the Coupe), close-to-perfect 50-50 weight distribution, remarkably precise steering, and skillfully engineered suspension.

All-new is the engine for the 335i model. This turbocharged, all-aluminum engine features nearly the same 'short block' and 3.0-liter displacement of its predecessor, but the result is an engine that is more responsive, more fuel efficient, and cleaner-running. Preserved is the previous engine's output of 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque, and a 7,000 rpm redline. The 6-speed manual gearbox remains standard, and the well-known 6-speed Steptronic automatic is optional, now featuring ''pull-style'' shift paddles on the multifunction steering wheel.

The Newest Addition in the BMW M-Series Family

Since the original conception of the M-Series, finding new ways to expand the boundaries of the existing BMW models has been the singal main purpose of the BMW M designers and engineers. Now the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M are the first all-wheel-drive models in the M-series family to offer remarkable performance, dynamic driving experience, athletic design, and premium quality. Both models are powered by a newly-developed 4.4-liter V8 M engine delivering 555 hp at 6,000 rpm and 500 lb-ft of torque from 1500 to 5,650 rpm. This new M engine is the world's first with a pulse-tuned exhaust manifold encompassing both rows of cylinders combined with high-performance twin-scroll twin turbo technology.

For the X5 M and X6 M, engineers pushed the capabilities of BMW's intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system and the Dynamic Performance Control system to manage the power and performance potential of these two new vehicles. The special M suspension includes Adaptive Drive and the newly-developed Servotronic power steering. These features combine to push the limits of what was previously possible with a sports-oriented vehicle, and guarantee driving behavior characteristics of a BMW M product: incredible stability, precisely controlled steering qualities, and optimal powerful performance.

The 7 Series will now be powered by a 400-hp twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. There will be no V6 to be found anymore. When it comes time to put the 7 in Drive mode, drivers will now use BMW's console-mounted joystick gear selector which replaces the column-mounted shifter of the previous-generation model. Menus are now displayed on a larger 10.2 inch high-definition central display. GPS navigation software is now stored on a hard drive, which can also be used to store about 13 gigabytes of music (auxiliary, USB, and iPod interfaces will also be included).

The safety technology ante has been upped with active cruise control that can now bring the car to a complete standstill, allowing it to be used in stop-and-go traffic. Other safety features include a lane departure warning, blind spot detection, a head-up display, automatic high beams, night vision (now with pedestrian detection), as well as side view and backup cameras. Side view cameras are mounted at the front corners and show the images in the control display when traveling at low speeds.

We could write an entire book about this amazing vehicle and it's technologically advanced features, interior luxury amenities, and breath-taking exterior styling, but for you to see it in person will be a whole different story!
