Overview

The 2011 BMW X5 is a premium Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) which offers quality comfort, safety, and luxury. It can seat up to seven passengers and is available in xDrive35i, xDrive35i Premium, xDrive35i Sport Activity, xDrive35d and xDrive50i trims.

Power and performance

The 2011 BMW X5 models are all-wheel driven (xDrive) and are powered by three different engines. The xDrive35i derives power from a 3.0-liter inline-6 turbocharged engine rated at 300 hp and 300 pound-feet of torque. This engine and the xDrive50i come standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The 35i gets an estimated fuel economy of 17 mpg city/25 mpg highway and 20 mpg combined. The X5 xDrive50i is powered by a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine which pumps out 400 hp and a robust 450 lb-ft of torque. Its fuel economy stands at 14/20/16. A 3.0-liter inline-6 turbodiesel engine good for 265 hp and 425 lb-ft of torque powers the xDrive35d with a six-speed automatic transmission. This engine featuring "clean diesel" technology delivers an estimated fuel economy of 19/26/22.

Body and styling

The xDrive35i includes standard features such as fog lights, 18-inch wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, cruise control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, leatherette premium vinyl upholstery, 10-way power front seats and a 12-speaker sound system with HD radio, a CD player and an auxiliary audio jack. The xDrive35d is equipped with similar features but gets a panoramic sunroof and has some additional options. The xDrive35i Premium builds on 35d's features with roof rails, privacy glass, 19-inch wheels, leather upholstery, a power-adjustable steering wheel and an iPod/USB audio interface (all optional on xDrive35d). The xDrive35i Sport Activity comes with an upgraded suspension, rolls on 20-inch wheels and is equipped with sport seats, a thicker steering wheel, darker exterior trim and an increased top speed. All these features are available as options on the xDrive50i, which rolls on 18-inch wheels with a V8 engine and is fitted with 16-speaker premium stereo.

Safety Features

The 2011 BMW X5 is loaded with a number of modern safety equipment including stability control, brake drying and standby features, antilock brakes, a rollover sensor, front side airbags and side curtain airbags for the first and second rows.
