AutoGuide: New 2016 BMW i3 is an Innovative Plug-In Electric Subcompact

The 2016 BMW i3 is an innovative plug-in, electric subcompact with an 81-mile range that can be extended with an optional gasoline engine, says AutoGuide in a new review. Click "play" in the video clip below to watch the full report.

The i3's 450-pound lithium-ion battery pack sends power to a rear-mounted electric motor producing 170 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. As equipped, the car is capable of traveling 81 miles on a single charge. AutoGuide suggests that those looking for a bit more range may want to opt for the i3 Rex, which includes a range-extending gasoline engine.

With the range extender engine installed, the i3 weighs just a bit more than 3,000 lbs. The extra weight shrinks the car’s all-electric range to just 72 miles, but overall range including the gasoline generator grows to an official figure of 150 miles.
